Newman Brothers Coffin Works
Grade II Listed Building in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter
The Brief
Working with the Birmingham Conservation Trust, we were asked to help and advise with the refurbishment of the old Coffin Works on Fleet Street in Birmingham City Centre. The Conservation Trust had come up with a design brief which incorporated two directional signs and a sign for the front of the building. As the building is listed, they were keen to use only traditional signwriting techniques, and we were happy to help.
As the work progressed, we were commissioned to also paint the crest on the new cast iron gates.
The Project Involved:
A consultation meeting with the Conservation Trust to discuss colours, techniques and so on.
3 lots of traditional sign painting which was drawn free-hand and painted directly to the external brickwork.
1 off sign painting onto iron gates
1 off double sided projecting sign
2 off brass menu cases
Did you know: Newman Brothers Coffin Works made the furniture for both Winston Churchill’s and Princess Diana’s coffin. As the work progressed, we were commissioned to also paint the crest on the new cast iron gates.
